How did the Atlas bone get its name?

The first bone in the spine carries the weight of the entire skull. The bone is named after the Greek God Atlas, who was punished by having to carry the weight of the celestial sphere on his shoulders for eternity. As in the myth, the first cervical vertebra is known as the Atlas because it bears the weight of the whole head. When there is a misalignment of the Atlas, the interactive communication between the brain and the rest of the body is greatly affected.
